New evidence has come to light suggesting a Scottish geologist came up with the theory of natural selection long before Charles Darwin.

Dr.James Hutton is said to have developed an almost identical explanation for evolution 65 years before “The Origin of the Species” was published in 1859.

    -Coffee Perks Up Sperm 2003-10-15

Men who start the day with a shot of caffeine have more vigorous sperm than those who never drink coffee, according to researchers in Brazil.

The findings suggest men with fertility problems could benefit from a coffee break and that caffeine-based stimulants could be used to improve sperm samples used in IVF procedures.

In the study, at the University of Sao Paulo, a research team led by Fabio Pasqualotto, analysed the semen of 750 men who attended the university’s clinic for vasectomies.

All the coffee drinkers tended to have stronger and more powerful sperm than those who did not. The results were presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference in San Antonio. Euan Paul, of the Coffee Science Information Centre, said:

    ‘These findings are very exciting.

‘If sperm don’t swim well they tend to be more lethargic — they give up before they reach their goal. It seems caffeine makes them swim faster’.

Scientists claim to have invented an instant translator which will allow people talking on phones in different languages to understand each other.

A research team from Rousse in Bulgaria claim to have patented the technology which converts words spoken in one language into digital code which can then be immediately interpreted into another language.

The translator chip can be inserted into any phone, the scientists claim.

Project leader Koycho Mitev told BTV national television:

'A person can talk freely on the phone in their mother tongue and at the other end of the world people will hear the translation of what they say'.

The Bulgarian team says it has also worked out a computer program that translates texts.

Mitev said that if investors show an interest in the technology, practical application can begin within a year.
