Russia formally ratified ‘The Kyoto Protocol on global warming’ on Thursday 2004-11-18, clearing the way for the international environment accord to come into force early next year 2005.
The United Nations (UN) accord, backed by 126 countries, formally enters into force 90 days after Thursday’s filing of the Russian ratification documents with the UN.
The documents were handed to UN secretary-general Mr.Kofi Annan by Moscow’s UN ambassador Andrei Denisov.
Both are in Nairobi, the home of the UN Environment Program (UNEP), for an UN Security Council meeting on Sudan.
‘This is a historic step forward in the world’s efforts to combat a truly global threat’, Mr.Annan said.
‘Most important, it ends a long period of uncertainty’.
