Nokia‘ yesterday said about 46 million of its cell phones have batteries that may overheat.

The company said it would replace the defective batteries at no cost to users.

About 100 cases of overheating batteries have so far been reported globally, but with no serious injuries so far, ‘Nokia’ said.

The batteries in question are ‘Nokias’ most widely used, the ‘Nokia’-branded “BL-5C, made by ‘Matsushita Electric Industrial’ from December 2005 to November 2006.

These batteries may short circuit while being charged, ‘Nokia’ said. According to ‘Nokia’s’ knowledge this issue does not affect any other use of the mobile device, said the company in a statement.

‘Nokia’, the world’s largest cell-phone maker, has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries that have made more than 300 million of them for ‘Nokia’. Only batteries produced by ‘Matsushita’ are affected.
