UK Smart City Rolls Out with Glasgow 2013-01-26

The Technology Strategy Board has awarded Glasgow City the 24 million GBP “Future Cities Demonstrator”  grant for projects that demonstrate how a city of the future might work.

This will include better services for Glaswegians; the city council will create an ‘app’ for reporting issues such as pot-holes and missing bin collections, and there will be  real-time information about traffic, and ‘apps’ to check that buses and trains are on time. Plan include linking up the CCTV cameras across the city with its traffic management unit in order to identify traffic incidents faster.

It will use analytical software and security cameras to help identify and prevent crime in the city and monitor energy levels to find new ways of providing gas and electricity to poorer areas where fuel poverty is a big issue. (more…)

Nay Hogmanay in Glesga 2011-07-30

Glasgow’s traditional Hogmanay party in George Square has been scrapped after the city council decided it was no longer delivering value for money.

Instead, the focus will switch to family-friendly events aimed at boosting the day and nighttime economy. This year’s event will finish at 22:00 and feature music, ceilidh dancing and curling on the George Square ice rink. (more…)

Chaos on Scotland’s roads as blizzards batter country

Thousands of people were stranded yesterday after the heavier-than-expected snowfall brought much of the country’s transport network to a complete standstill.

Up to 40omm of snow fell in just a few hours, leaving workers trapped miles away from their homes and pupils and teachers stuck inside schools.

The army was drafted in to help ‘The Scottish Ambulance Service‘ reach patients by providing military 4×4 vehicles to transport paramedics and transfer those in need of medical assistance to (more…)

Waitrose into Scotland 2010-04-09

Waitrose‘ has been given the green light to build its biggest Scottish supermarket to date on the outskirts of Glasgow.

The upmarket grocery chain was granted permission to build a 25 000 sq ft branch in Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire south of Glasgow. It will be almost twice the size of its recently opened store in Byres Road in the city’s west end. (more…)

‘The National Audit Office’ (‘The NAO’) today criticised the BBC for spending 2 000 million GBP on three major building projects, including the redevelopment of its ‘Broadcasting House‘ HQ in London, without ‘clear assessments of the intended benefits’ in terms of value for money. (more…)

Design ‘guru’ George Davies has picked Glasgow as the Scottish home of his new independent clothing chain.

Now he is set to launch ‘affordable luxury’ brand ‘GIVe’ in seven UK cities, with Glasgow hosting the only Scottish site. (more…)

The Late Salvadore Dali’s masterpiece, ‘Christ of Saint John of the Cross: Nuclear Mysticism’, was returned to its original Scottish home on 2006-06-02.

The painting was unveiled at Glasgow’s ‘Kelvingrove’ Gallery as the museum approached the finishing stages of a 27 million GBP overhaul. (more…)
