A student has developed an optical sphere which could be used to create an ‘invisibility cloak’.

Mr Janos Perczel, 22, an undergraduate student at St Andrews University in Fife, said that by slowing down light by way of an optical illusion, the light can then be bent around an object to ‘conceal’ it. (more…)

Scientists have discovered a new method that can help women know if their biological clock is ticking, and find out whether they are likely to have an earlier menopause and should not delay trying to conceive, or whether their fertile life will end later.

For the first time, a team of Scottish researchers from St Andrew’s has found how levels of a hormone, which can reveal how many eggs a woman has remaining, change throughout her reproductive life. (more…)

Glasgow’s traditional Hogmanay party in George Square has been scrapped after the city council decided it was no longer delivering value for money.

Instead, the focus will switch to family-friendly events aimed at boosting the day and nighttime economy. This year’s event will finish at 22:00 and feature music, ceilidh dancing and curling on the George Square ice rink. (more…)

Ms.Zaha Hadid is half an hour late. Which befits the image of the first lady of architecture but is also very apt.

Despite having worked in the UK for the best part of 30 years, where she’s produced many innovative designs, the Riverside Museum in Glasgow is her first major commission to be built in the UK.

But having arrived on the scene late, she and her London-based company seem to be making up for lost time, with a string of iconic buildings due to open in the next 18 months, including the new aquatics centre for the 2012 Olympics. (more…)

Chaos on Scotland’s roads as blizzards batter country

Thousands of people were stranded yesterday after the heavier-than-expected snowfall brought much of the country’s transport network to a complete standstill.

Up to 40omm of snow fell in just a few hours, leaving workers trapped miles away from their homes and pupils and teachers stuck inside schools.

The army was drafted in to help ‘The Scottish Ambulance Service‘ reach patients by providing military 4×4 vehicles to transport paramedics and transfer those in need of medical assistance to (more…)

Scotland’s economy will avoid a double-dip recession —  but full recovery will not be achieved for a decade, according to  leading economic forecaster, ‘The Ernst & Young Scottish Item Club’, who have predicted growth of 1.1 per cent this year and 2.2 per cent in 2011. (more…)

Almost the entire adult population of Scotland are likely to be either cigarette smokers, heavy drinkers, physically inactive, overweight or have a poor diet, according to a study published on Friday.
